Kalama Sutta

This morning, the PAD (People's Alliance for Democracy), a well-known anti-government group, took over a public Bangkok-based TV station, known to be pro-government, which is known to be pro-Thaksin. As many people might have already known, Thailand's political scene has been a deadlock for a few years already. Since I am determined to not talk politics on my blog, I will instead present one of my most favorite Buddha's teachings.

More than 2,500 years ago, Buddha passed by a small village in India. As India at that time was flooded with many different sets of teachings, the villagers were skeptical about Buddha's teaching. The people (called the Kalamas) asked Buddha, why should they believe in him and not the others? Ironically, Buddha told them not to trust him. His speech at the Kalamas' village was later known as 'Kalama Sutta.'

Kalama Sutta

• Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing ;
• nor upon tradition
• nor upon rumor ;
• nor upon what is in a scripture ;
• nor upon surmise;
• nor upon an axiom;
• nor upon specious reasoning;
• nor upon a bias towards a notion that has been pondered over;
• nor upon another's seeming ability;
• nor upon the consideration, "The monk is our teacher."
• Kalamas, when you yourselves know: "These things are good; these things are not blamable; these things are praised by the wise; undertaken and observed, these things lead to benefit and happiness," enter on and abide in them.'

1. อย่าเพิ่งเชื่อตามที่ฟังๆ กันมา
2. อย่าเพิ่งเชื่อตามที่ทำต่อๆ กันมา
3. อย่าเพิ่งเชื่อตามคำเล่าลือ
4. อย่าเพิ่งเชื่อโดยอ้างตำรา
5. อย่าเพิ่งเชื่อโดยนึกเดา
6. อย่าเพิ่งเชื่อโดยคาดคะเนเอา
7. อย่าเพิ่งเชื่อโดยนึกคิดตามแนวเหตุผล
8. อย่าเพิ่งเชื่อเพราะถูกกับทฤษฎีของตน
9. อย่าเพิ่งเชื่อเพราะมีรูปลักษณ์ที่ควรเชื่อได้
10. อย่าเพิ่งเชื่อเพราะผู้พูดเป็นครูบาอาจารย์ของตน

เมื่อใด ท่านทั้งหลายพึงรู้ด้วยตนเองว่า ธรรมเหล่านี้เป็นกุศล

ธรรมเหล่านี้ไม่มีโทษ ธรรมเหล่านี้ท่านผู้รู้สรรเสริญ

ธรรมเหล่านี้ใครสมาทานให้บริบูรณ์แล้ว เป็นไปเพื่อประโยชน์เกื้อกูล เพื่อความสุข

เมื่อนั้น ท่านทั้งหลายควรเข้าถึงธรรมเหล่านั้นอยู่
